The average adult needs between 7 & 9 hours of sleep per night.

 

Previous studies have shown that 70 million Americans are sleep-deprived, contributing to increased accidents, worsening health and lower student test scores.

 

The National Sleep Foundation says that about 39% of Americans get less than seven hours of sleep each weeknight, and more than one in three (37%) are so sleepy during the day that it interferes with daily activities.

 

Adolescents/Teenagers need between 8 – 9 hours of sleep per night. Only about one in five adolescents between the ages of 11 and 17 gets the recommended nine hours of sleep per night, and about half get less than eight hours on school nights.

 

Many studies have reported that the fewer hours of sleep an adolescent gets from the recommended, the more likely they are to be obese or to suffer from mood disorders.

 

Staying up late and sleeping until noon usually seems like normal teenage behavior. But there's increasing concern among doctors that many teens may actually be suffering from a little-known sleep disorder called delayed sleep phase syndrome (DSPS).
